The Project “Demonstration of production phase-out of mercury-containing medical thermometers and sphygmomanometers and promoting the application of mercury-free alternatives in medical facilities in China” was approved by Global Environment Facility (GEF) on November 20, 2019. It was jointly developed by FECO and The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with a total budget of 128 million USD, including 16 million USD GEF grant and 112 million USD co-financing.

The Project objective is to establish the enabling environment to accelerate the transfer to the production of mercury-free medical devices, and to lay the foundation for market acceptance and the growth of mercury-free devices in medical facilities in China, in order to accelerate our implementation process to meet associated phase-out deadlines under the Minamata Convention on Mercury.

The project is the first mercury-related GEF-7 project applied by Foreign Environmental Cooperation Center (FECO), Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE) as the Project Executing Entity of GEF.
